You Gotta Trust Me On This One

I am sure my friend, client and boss Matt will empathize on this one.  Tonight just when things started to get amazing, my camera battery wore out.

Because tonight’s jury judging show is the backup they tape in case of a technical breakdown, they can’t have any empty seats showing on camera.  So from my crow’s nest up in the cheap seats, I got upgraded to the $150 seats in the fourth row center.  I got a few shots as the show was starting, so you can see how close I was to the action. The show was great, the OGAE fan party afterward even greater, but it’s 2:30am and I need sleep.  Talk to you all in the morning?

  1. I had to laugh when I read this. Len is referring two at least two incidents – one last summer and one last month – when, at the worst possible moment, a camera went dead without any warning.

I’ll just mention last summer’s incident “moment” when we were staging a Batman flash mob at the Sherman Oaks Galleria as a publicity stunt in conjunction with the new Batman movie opening. My video team had planned to use my personal iPhone 4S as a crucial fourth camera view from a roof. We had purchased Apple lenses and mini-tripod for it and were hopeful it would work.

The event took place around 7pm on Thursday, July 19, 2012. At 6:30pm, with no warning, my iPhone simply died. Not only did we have to reshuffled our camera assignments but I lost what was in effect my “walkie talkie” to coordinate the event. I couldn’t believe it. The phone was ruled dead by Apple and was replaced the next day.

The flash mob turned out great and I mention it here because Len Whitney created some of terrific, tongue-in-cheek art from the original Batman television series (POW!) and can be seen in the background towards the beginning of the video.
